In her own words ... The
Tumblers
|
Tumbler III |
A recurring scene, that of a
falling figure or tumbler, has appeared, periodically, in my work. The
sensation of falling is not uncommon in dream states.
It was in 1969 that I first began to deal with this image as subject
matter. In a series of drawings entitled, Weightless, 1969-1978,
a single figure is seen cast out in space, falling through some
existential never-land.

Tumbler #11 |
After a long hiatus, the tumbler
reappears in 1991-92, combined with landscape elements. Unlike oriental
landscapes, where man, if he appears at all, is in harmony with nature,
these tumblers are completely out of sync with the natural world.
In 1999, I again revisit this theme. In these compositions, the
figure is determined to avoid falling. It is the line that is tumbling
chaotically, like some kind of roller coaster in motion. The figure
hangs on, intent on going along for the ride.
I remain curious as to whether these tumblers will emerge again in some
future series of drawings.
